Simon Vance is the voice behind tons of popular audio books, including many of the James Bond series. I mean, seriously, the Dude is the voice of James Bond. How cool would that be? I secretly hope he warms up for work each day by introducing himself as “Vance, Simon Vance” at parties. Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book continues to dominate the awards circuit, picking up the Hugo Award for best novel at Worldcon in Montreal over the weekend.

Philippa Gregory, author of  The Other Boleyn Girl, has a new book coming out on August 18th and next week she’ll make her twitter debut .

Starting August 11th, Gregory will be writing a series of tweets in the voice of Elizabeth Woodville, the Plantagenet queen who is the central character of the new book, The White Queen.  Her publisher, Simon & Schuster, say it is the first time a bestselling author has condensed their novel on twitter.

The 150,000 word story was a bit of a challenge to condense into nearly 250 tweets of 140 characters or less, but Gregory seems quite pleased with her results. “Tweets are a discipline, rather like a haiku, and the shortness of the sentence gives each one a rhythm which is really interesting for prose,” she said. “It was more like writing poetry than prose. And some of the tweets seem to me to be more arresting than the prose of the book.”

But, score one for the audio book - it’s written and narrated by the original Julie. The woman who truly haunted the local butcher and sent her husband out at all hours for butter, butter and more butter. (Really, what doesn’t butter make better?) You’ll get to hear her story in her own voice, something that I think makes audio books very special.

Yet the movie, it stars Meryl Streep and she’s awesome. You know she’s awesome.

This truly is a movie - book grudge match and choosing a winner seems too tough to call. In my opinion, for Meryl’s performance alone, the movie’s worth checking out. But of course you should listen to the audio book too. You know, just for good measure.

August is looking to be a good month for Mystery, Thriller fans! Two of the best-selling authors of all time (and long-time member favorites) have new books coming out that are sure to heat up the last days of summer.

Sandra Brown is back this summer with Smash Cut. ‘Smash cut’ is a movie term referring to a sudden shift in scene, made specifically to shock the viewer. Brown explains this in a video on her offical website. “You see, my villan in this book is a film scholar. He eats, drinks, and sleeps movies. His conversations are sprinkled with quotes of movie dialogue - some you’ll recognize, and some you may not.  The research for this book was fun. Watching movies, trying to find the perfect line of dialogue to tie into the scenes that I was writing. Sometimes it got a little creepy, as does my villan. As the story progresses, he takes his fetish a bit further than quoting dialogue and actually begins re-enacting ….. well, I guess you’ll just have to read it, won’t you?”

The Smash Cut audiobook doesn’t come out until August 11th, but you can beat the rush and add it to your rental shelf now!

5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1… and back to the blog.

In an interview with People Magazine, Conrad said, “If someone said to me five years ago when all this started that I would one day make the New York Times Best Seller list, I wouldn’t have believed it.” Well frankly, I still don’t believe it and I’m looking at the list right now!

I should mention that she’s number one in the “Children’s Chapter Books” section, but still, she’s on the freakin’ New York Times Best Seller list! So aside from being on a television show simply because her parents are rich, and “working” at Teen Vogue, Conrad can add “author” to her resume.

Personal feelings about L.C. aside, my biggest complaint about the book is that it’s not the trashy tell all complete with thinly veiled insults I’d hoped it would be! Released just in time to become the ultimate beach companion, the book isn’t soap-opera enough for a fun summer read. For me, it’s the literary equivalent to the unimaginative a-line dresses from her fashion line. But hey, at least she uses proper spelling and full sentences, right?

I hate to admit this, but I’m actually more interested in the book Speidi is apparently working on. You can always count on them for the insults, name dropping and just plain crazy that makes for an entertaining summer audio book.

Janet Hubert, the original Aunt Viv from the 1990’s television sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, has penned a tell all book, “Perfection is Not a Sitcom Mom” revealing a few secrets about the show’s star, Will Smith.

Most notably she writes, “Smith had people around him who made sure no one outshone him. I was happy to see Don Cheadle become the quality actor that he is, and often wondered how he made it past one episode, as Hilary’s boyfriend, being such a fierce actor. No one could be on The Tonight Show that first season, except Will. And I mean no one.”

Now I have to admit, I like Will Smith. He seems like he’d be a nice guy. And anyone who has seen the first few episodes of the first season of the Fresh Prince of Bel Air knows his acting was terrible. He mouthed the lines of the other characters in between his own! Seriously! Watch for it. So only getting actors on the show who were worse, well, that seems nearly impossible. Even if they were able to find the worst cast of actors in the history of television, would anyone have watched it?

Still, in favour of the original Aunt Viv, I totally preferred her over the new actress they brought in, and never really understood why they replaced her. “Perfection is Not a Sitcom Mom” is her side of what happened, and our chance to get a glimpse behind the scenes of the popular sitcom.

Your move, Will. I’m not sure if Uncle Phil will be able to bail you out of this one.
